Darcy's sister commits suicide after being left with child by Wickham, and Darcy spends the summer at Ramsgate blaming himself for her death. There, he is daily on the verge of killing himself out of overwhelming guilt. Then, one day, he swims far outward into the sea, deciding that the time has come. But, as he goes further and further out, he hears a voice screaming at him from the shore. It is a woman, and he sees that she has entered the water in an attempt to save him.
