The Convair 880 was engineered as a swifter, more compact rival to the Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8. It was propelled by four General Electric CJ-805-3 engines, a civilian variant of the renowned military J79. Capable of reaching a top speed of 615 MPH, it was among the swiftest commercial airliners produced. However, demand for aircraft in this smaller, faster category did not meet expectations, leading to production halting at just 65 units. Post its last commercial flight in 1975, several 880s continued service as freighters into the 1980s.
