These unique, sterling silver earrings feature the traditional Greek Swirl Motif, also known as "Spira". What makes them particularly unique is the hammered look with diamond like reflections. These earrings are Rhodium* (Platinum) plated to preserve their shiny characteristics. Made in Greece Sterling Silver (925 Stamp), Rhodium Plated Straight-back silver post (for pierced ears only) Approx. 6mm(0.23 inch) diameter *Rhodium is a precious metal, a member of the platinum family. Rhodium electroplating is used on jewelry in order to provide a surface that will resist scratches and tarnish while giving it a white and reflective appearance. The Swirl Motif in Greek History The swirl motif is inspired by the Ancient Greek mythological Labyrinth, which was an elaborate structure designed and built by the legendary artificer Daedalus for King Minos of Crete at Knossos. Its function was to hold the Minotaur, a creature that was half man and half bull and was eventually killed by the Athenian hero Theseus. Daedalus had made the Labyrinth so cunningly that he himself could barely escape it after he built it. Theseus was aided by Ariadne, who provided him with a skein of thread, literally the "clew", or "clue", so he could find his way out again.
