This margin signifies the oscillation circuit's ability to amplify, indicated by a ratio based on crystal resistance. A theoretical oscillation circuit operation requires a margin of 1 or more. However, a margin close to 1 may lead to operation failures due to excessive start-up times. Increasing the oscillation margin can mitigate such issues.
- Calculate oscillation margin using the following method:
- Ensure you have measurement equipment (like an oscilloscope or frequency counter) to observe oscillation
- Series connect a resistor to the resonator and verify if the oscillation circuit functions
- Upon confirming oscillation, increase resistance. If no oscillation occurs, decrease resistance
- Determine the maximum resistance (Rs max) just before oscillation ceases
- Measure the oscillating frequency with Rs max applied
- Compute the effective resistance (RL) using the formula below:
- Compute the absolute value of negative resistance (|R|) using the formula below:
