Open Field Test

The Open Field Test is a popular method for assessing exploratory behavior and anxiety, with thigmotaxis used to evaluate various treatments. Ambulation is the most common behavior studied, but others like latency or rearing can also be measured. Walls can be opaque or clear, with clear walls recommended for anxiety measurements. The apparatus is a square arena with high walls, available in 27x27 cm and 50x50 cm sizes. It was developed by C. S. Hall in the early 1930s and is used to assess locomotion, exploratory behavior, and anxiety-related responses.
