In parts of Asia and India, a distinctive and varied silk is produced by one of the world's largest moth species, the Ailanthus silkworm or Sami cynthia moth. This domesticated species feeds on leaves from the 'tree of the gods' (Ailanthus), Ficus, and Castor bean plants to create its prized silk, which naturally ranges in color from white to gold to red. Unlike mulberry silk, which forms continuous cocoons, these cocoons are built in fragments as the silkworm pauses during spinning. The shorter silk lengths prevent reeling, so they're carded and spun like cotton or wool. Eri silk has a fuzzy texture due to lower Sericin content, a protein that protects and binds silk.
