Use force from your legs to push down on the aerator, rather than engaging your back; this will reduce stress on joints and muscles, and generally make the process of aeration easier on your body.- Make sure to overlap passes with the aerator to ensure thorough coverage. This is especially important in areas with compacted soil. Also try to maintain a consistent pattern and depth as you aerate. This uniformity ensures that all parts of the lawn receive the same treatment.- After aerating, leave the soil cores on the lawn. They will break down and return nutrients to the soil. If they are particularly unsightly, you can break them up by mowing or using a rake.- Immediately after aerating is a great time to overseed and fertilize your lawn. The open soil is ideal for seed germination, and the fertilizer will reach deeper into the soil.
