Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon, laid siege to Jerusalem in 594; the siege lasted some thirty -six months before Jerusalem fell on March 16th, 597. Because the Jews had a history of being rebellious, Nebuchadnezzar decided against allowing Judah to exist as a vassal state. He razed the city, carried the sacred implements from the temple to Babylon, and stored them in the temple of his gods. He also took the best young nobles to serve as administrators in his Babylonian government. Daniel was one of these. Historians believe Daniel was about fourteen years old when the seige began and seventeen when he was transported to Babylon in 597. Daniel remained faithful and obedient to Yahweh.
