DINOSAUR FACTS: Length: up to 2m (6.6ft) long. Location: Yixian Formation, western Liaoning, China. Time period: Early Cretaceous 126 m.y.a. Named By: Xu Xing et al., 2004. Considered to be an early ancestor of the larger Tyrannosaurs of the late Cretaceous, Dilong is best known for its coat of insulating protofeathers, as evidenced by the fossil record. These protofeathers indicate a necessity to maintain a high body temperature to support an active hunting lifestyle, likely feeding on small lizards and occasionally on other dinosaurs such as psittacosaurus.
