The Chico Jujube (Ziziphus jujuba 'Chico') is a highly-regarded cultivar developed at the USDA Plant Introduction Station in Chico, California. It is particularly famous for its unique "apple-like" qualities and its balanced flavor profile. Fruit Characteristics Appearance: Unlike the typical oval or pear-shaped jujubes, Chico fruits are round and flattened on the bottom, resembling a miniature green apple or a pumpkin. Flavor & Texture: It is prized for a sweet-tart flavor (a "brisk" sweetness) that most other varieties lack. The texture is exceptionally crisp and light, making it one of the top choices for fresh eating. Harvest: Fruits are ready when they turn from green to about 80% reddish-brown. They also dry well, taking on a chewy, date-like consistency. Tree & Growth Habit Form: It has a more bushy, spreading growth habit compared to the upright 'Li' variety. It is naturally ornamental with zigzagging branches and shiny, fine-textured foliage. Size: In the ground, it can reach 15–30 feet, but it is easily maintained at 8–10 feet with pruning. It is an excellent candidate for large pots (35L+). Thorns: Be aware that Chico is a spiny variety; it does have thorns along its branches. Hardiness: Extremely hardy, surviving temperatures down to -20°F (Zone 5–10). It thrives in hot, dry summers and is very drought-tolerant once established.
