In 1917, following the RFC's heavy losses in 'Bloody April', the most successful British WWI fighter was developed. The S.E.5's predecessor had excellent technical specs, but its unreliable 150 hp Hispano Suiza engine hindered its full potential. The S.E.5a's first flight, powered by a more robust 200 hp Hispano Suiza engine, took place in May 1917. Just over a month later, mass-produced S.E.5a fighters reached the frontlines. Later, the engine was swapped for a Viper, enhancing speed and climb rate.
